How much does a wedding cake cost? Order servings, not tiers
A cake is priced by the slice, so the number that matters is how many slices you need. Work that out from your replies and your other desserts, and the price follows.

The short answer
Couples paid $530 on average for their wedding cake in The Knot's 2026 study, and the middle of its spend range was $500. Zola's cost index puts the average higher, at $917. Bakers price by the slice, often $3 to $8, so count servings first: your yes replies, plus-ones included, times the share of guests who will eat cake. For 117 guests with a dessert table beside the cake, that is about 94 servings, or $282 to $752.
Most answers to this question give a range and a list of things that move it: tiers, fondant, flowers, the baker's city. All true, and none of it tells you what to order. A baker will ask you one question first, "how many servings?", and the answer comes from your guest list, not from a picture of a cake. This guide shows what couples paid, then how to work out your own number.
What couples paid
The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study asked 10,474 couples married in 2025 what they spent. 76 percent had a wedding cake.
| Spend on the cake | Amount |
|---|---|
| Low end of the range | $300 |
| Middle of the range | $500 |
| Average | $530 |
| High end of the range | $800 |
The Knot gives these as a range of typical spend, from the lower quarter of couples to the top quarter, so read them as rough markers rather than exact cut-offs.
Zola's cost index gives a national average of $917, with most couples spending between $700 and $1,100, and puts the cake at about 2 percent of the whole budget. Zola's own figures for cakes and desserts together run from $474 in St. Louis to $1,156 in San Francisco. The two studies measure different couples, so read them as a range: $500 is typical, and $900 to $1,100 is normal for a larger or more detailed cake.
The cake is one of the smaller lines in a wedding. In our guide to what a 100 person wedding costs, it is $500 out of $28,510 in the middle column. That is worth knowing before you spend an evening trying to save $100 on it.
Step 1: Count the people who will eat cake
Start from the people who have said yes, plus-ones included, not from the number you invited. Then decide how much of the room the cake has to feed. Zola gives a simple rule by how dessert is served:
| How dessert is served | Order cake for |
|---|---|
| The cake is the dessert, served to every table | Every guest |
| A dessert table or station beside the cake | 75 to 85 percent of guests |
| Several desserts, the cake one of them | 60 to 70 percent of guests |
The Knot's study shows why the second and third rows matter: 53 percent of couples added a dessert table, while 72 percent still cut a cake. Many weddings have both, which means many cakes are ordered for more people than will eat them.
Step 2: Turn servings into a price
Take The Knot's average of 117 guests, all of them yes, and the three ways of serving dessert. Rounding to whole servings, and pricing at $3, $5 and $8 a slice, Zola's typical range:
| Dessert | Servings | $3 | $5 | $8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cake only | 117 | $351 | $585 | $936 |
| Dessert table, 80% | 94 | $282 | $470 | $752 |
| Several, 65% | 76 | $228 | $380 | $608 |
Two things stand out. The way you serve dessert moves the price as much as the baker you choose: cake for everyone at $5 a slice costs more than a cake beside a dessert table at $6. And the table lines up with what couples actually paid, from about $300 to $800, so the per-slice range is a fair guide.
If you plan to save the top tier for your first anniversary, it does not feed anyone on the night. Count its servings on top of the ones you need.

A per-slice price is only comparable when you know what sits outside it. Before you book, ask each baker, and the venue, these four questions:
- What size is a serving? Bakers count a wedding serving as a narrow slice, often smaller than a slice at a birthday party, and not every baker cuts the same. Make sure two quotes are for the same size of slice.
- What do delivery and setup cost? Zola notes that delivery is usually a separate charge, set by the distance to the venue and how complex the cake is to assemble.
- Does the venue or caterer charge to cut and serve it? Some charge a cake-cutting fee when the cake comes from an outside baker. It belongs in the total, and our guide to hidden wedding costs has the others like it.
- What does the design add? Zola notes that buttercream costs less than fondant, which is slower to work with. Fresh flowers, sugar flowers and extra tiers each add to the price. Ask for each one as a separate line, so you can see what it costs to drop.
Which cake to order: a simple rule
- If the cake is the only dessert, order servings for every guest who said yes, and keep the design simple if the total is high. Every guest eats it, so the money goes on the plate.
- If you have a dessert table, order cake for about 80 percent of your guests, and put the difference into the table rather than a bigger cake.
- If you mainly want the cutting moment, order a small cake for the photos and let the other desserts feed the room. Ask your baker whether they offer a plain cake to be sliced in the kitchen alongside a smaller decorated one, if you still want cake for everyone.
Whichever you choose, the cutting itself is short. Our wedding day timeline gives it about four minutes, usually after the first dance.
When to book, and when to give the final number
Zola suggests booking your baker three to six months before the wedding, after a tasting. Agree the size of slice and the price per serving at booking, then give the final number of servings when you give your caterer the final headcount, usually between five working days and two weeks before. Our guide to the final headcount shows how to get that number right.
Most bakers take a deposit when you book and the rest before the wedding. Put both dates in your budget; our guide to paying wedding vendors has the usual split.
Yes, I Do
Every cost, and what is left to pay
Add a quote or photograph it, and the amounts and due dates are filled in. You both see what is paid and which month is the heavy one.

Keeping the cake in its line
In Yes, I Do the budget has a Cake category from the start, set at 2 percent of the total, close to Zola's figure. Add the baker's quote, and each payment carries its own due date, so you see what is committed, what is paid and what is still to pay. The guest list counts every yes with plus-ones included, which is the number Step 1 starts from, and your partner sees the same numbers on their phone.

Questions
How much does a wedding cake cost for 100 guests?
At $3 to $8 a slice, a cake for 100 guests costs $300 to $800 if everyone has cake, or $240 to $640 if a dessert table means you order for 80 of them. Delivery and any cake-cutting fee come on top. The Knot's 2026 study found couples paid $530 on average.
How much should a wedding cake cost?
Around $500 is typical: it is the middle of The Knot's 2026 spend range, and the average was $530. Zola's index is higher, at $917, with most couples between $700 and $1,100. Work out your own from the number of servings you need times the baker's price per slice.
How many tiers do I need for 100 guests?
It depends on the size of each tier more than the number of them. Zola puts a two tier cake at about 50 servings and a four tier cake at up to 150. Tell the baker the number of servings you need and let them suggest the tiers.
Is $500 enough for a wedding cake?
Yes, for most weddings. At $5 a slice it covers 100 servings, and it is the middle of the spend range in The Knot's 2026 study. Keep the design simple and order cake for the share of guests who will eat it, and $500 goes a long way.
Do you need a wedding cake if you have a dessert table?
No. A cake is a tradition, not a rule, and many couples have only a small one for the cutting. In The Knot's 2026 study, 53 percent of couples added a dessert table and 72 percent cut a cake, so plenty had both. If you have both, order cake for about 75 to 85 percent of guests.
What is a cake-cutting fee?
A charge from the venue or caterer to cut, plate and serve a cake made by an outside baker. Not every venue charges one, and those that do set their own price. Ask before you book the baker and add it to the cake's line, not to catering, so you see the cake's true cost.
