How much does a 170 person wedding cost: three budgets for one hundred and seventy guests

The same ten vendors, priced three ways, for a wedding of one hundred and seventy people. Food is multiplied by 170. The rest is what couples actually paid.

The short answer

Based on The Knot's 2026 vendor prices, a wedding for 170 guests costs about $21,129 at the low end, $35,349 in the middle and $70,918 at the high end, before drinks, invitations and the officiant. Food is the line that belongs to this count: at $70 a head, catering for 170 is $11,900.

At one hundred and seventy guests the food and drink lines start to rival the venue. A few extra names look cheap until you multiply them by the caterer's price per head. The national average of $292 a guest would put 170 people at $49,640. That number folds in the venue and the dress, which do not change if you invite ten more. The useful figure is the catering line, and the three columns below.

Three versions of a 170 guest wedding

The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, of 10,474 couples married in 2025, reports each vendor at three levels. The low column is what the bottom quarter of couples paid, the middle is typical of the middle half, and the high column is what the top quarter paid. Catering is per head, so it is multiplied by 170. Cake and rentals are scaled from the study's 100-guest figures. Venue, photographer, dress, DJ, attire and hair stay as reported, because they do not grow with every extra seat.

LineLowMiddleHigh
Venue$3,500$10,400$24,800
Catering, 170 guests$10,200$11,900$22,100
Photographer$1,500$2,800$4,700
Wedding dress$1,200$2,000$3,200
Florist$1,089$2,299$5,808
Event rentals$1,870$2,890$5,440
DJ$800$1,600$2,700
Cake$510$850$1,360
Groom's attire$260$310$410
Hair and makeup$200$300$400
Total$21,129$35,349$70,918
Per guest$124$208$417

The middle column is $208 a guest. The Knot's national average is $292 a guest for 117 people. A larger wedding is usually a little less per head, because those same fixed lines are spread further.

Where the prices come from

These prices are based on The Knot's 2026 vendor data, then scaled to 170 guests where a line grows with the list.

  • Catering. The Knot's low, typical and high prices per head ($60, $70 and $130), times 170.
  • Cake and rentals. The study's 100-guest amounts, scaled by 170 / 100.
  • Florist. The study's amounts, scaled gently (70 percent of the 100-guest figure plus 30 percent times 170 / 100), because flowers grow with the room but not one-for-one with seats.
  • Venue, photographer, dress, DJ, attire, hair. As reported in the study. A room for 170 can cost less or more than the typical venue line. Use the column that matches the room you are looking at.
  • Drinks, invitations, officiant. Not in the ten lines. Zola's 2026 survey puts bar service at about $47 a guest (from its $5,542 average across 117 guests), the invitation suite at $500 for that average wedding, and the officiant at $325.

With a bar, invitations and an officiant at those figures, the middle column comes to $44,390. The bar alone is $7,990.

A couple using a family home or a park, spending on catering and flowers instead of a venue fee. Putting those choices on this count:

LineColumnAmount
Venuelow$3,500
Cateringmid$11,900
Photographermid$2,800
Rentalshigh$5,440
Everything elsemiddle$7,359
Total$30,999

That is $4,350 less than the all-middle column of $35,349. The trade is the same one most couples make: spend on two priorities, and pick the venue column by what the room includes. Our guide to what a wedding venue costs compares the three ways venues price.

What ten guests more or less changes

Ten more guests at the middle catering price is $700 of food. That is not ten times $208, which would be $2,080 and would pretend the photographer comes along. Add drinks at $47 a head and ten more people are about $1,170 before tax and service. If you are cutting instead, the guide to cutting a guest list has a fair method.

RSVPify's 2019 figures found 83 percent of invited guests said yes. To seat about 170, invite around 205. Our guide to how many people to invite works through that rate.

Questions

How much does a 170 person wedding cost?

About $35,349 for the ten main vendors at typical 2026 prices, or $21,129 to $70,918. With a bar, invitations and an officiant at Zola's averages, the middle total is about $44,390.

How much is that per person?

$208 a guest at typical prices for the ten vendors. The cost of one more guest is much lower: $70 of food, plus drinks.

It covers the middle column of $35,349 before drinks. A full bar at $7,990 on top does not fit unless you trim a line or keep drinks to beer and wine.

What is the most expensive part of a 170 guest wedding?

Catering, at $11,900 in the middle column, now larger than the typical venue of $10,400.

Does the average of $292 a guest apply to 170 people?

As a rough total, $49,640. As a planning number, no. Use the catering price per head for decisions about the list, and the table above for the rest.
