How much does a 185 person wedding cost: three budgets for one hundred and eighty-five guests

The same ten vendors, priced three ways, for a wedding of one hundred and eighty-five people. Food is multiplied by 185. The rest is what couples actually paid.

The short answer

Based on The Knot's 2026 vendor prices, a wedding for 185 guests costs about $22,280 at the low end, $36,815 in the middle and $73,684 at the high end, before drinks, invitations and the officiant. Food is the line that belongs to this count: at $70 a head, catering for 185 is $12,950.

At one hundred and eighty-five guests the food and drink lines start to rival the venue. A few extra names look cheap until you multiply them by the caterer's price per head. The national average of $292 a guest would put 185 people at $54,020. That number folds in the venue and the dress, which do not change if you invite ten more. The useful figure is the catering line, and the three columns below.

Three versions of a 185 guest wedding

The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, of 10,474 couples married in 2025, reports each vendor at three levels. The low column is what the bottom quarter of couples paid, the middle is typical of the middle half, and the high column is what the top quarter paid. Catering is per head, so it is multiplied by 185. Cake and rentals are scaled from the study's 100-guest figures. Venue, photographer, dress, DJ, attire and hair stay as reported, because they do not grow with every extra seat.

LineLowMiddleHigh
Venue$3,500$10,400$24,800
Catering, 185 guests$11,100$12,950$24,050
Photographer$1,500$2,800$4,700
Wedding dress$1,200$2,000$3,200
Florist$1,130$2,385$6,024
Event rentals$2,035$3,145$5,920
DJ$800$1,600$2,700
Cake$555$925$1,480
Groom's attire$260$310$410
Hair and makeup$200$300$400
Total$22,280$36,815$73,684
Per guest$120$199$398

The middle column is $199 a guest. The Knot's national average is $292 a guest for 117 people. A larger wedding is usually a little less per head, because those same fixed lines are spread further.

Where the prices come from

These prices are based on The Knot's 2026 vendor data, then scaled to 185 guests where a line grows with the list.

  • Catering. The Knot's low, typical and high prices per head ($60, $70 and $130), times 185.
  • Cake and rentals. The study's 100-guest amounts, scaled by 185 / 100.
  • Florist. The study's amounts, scaled gently (70 percent of the 100-guest figure plus 30 percent times 185 / 100), because flowers grow with the room but not one-for-one with seats.
  • Venue, photographer, dress, DJ, attire, hair. As reported in the study. A room for 185 can cost less or more than the typical venue line. Use the column that matches the room you are looking at.
  • Drinks, invitations, officiant. Not in the ten lines. Zola's 2026 survey puts bar service at about $47 a guest (from its $5,542 average across 117 guests), the invitation suite at $500 for that average wedding, and the officiant at $325.

With a bar, invitations and an officiant at those figures, the middle column comes to $46,626. The bar alone is $8,695.

A couple who want a historic venue with its own tables, and are willing to keep the rest of the lines in the middle. Putting those choices on this count:

LineColumnAmount
Venuehigh$24,800
Cateringmid$12,950
Photographermid$2,800
Rentalslow$2,035
Everything elsemiddle$7,520
Total$50,105

That is $13,290 more than the all-middle column of $36,815. The trade is the same one most couples make: spend on two priorities, and pick the venue column by what the room includes. Our guide to what a wedding venue costs compares the three ways venues price.

What ten guests more or less changes

Ten more guests at the middle catering price is $700 of food. That is not ten times $199, which would be $1,990 and would pretend the photographer comes along. Add drinks at $47 a head and ten more people are about $1,170 before tax and service. If you are cutting instead, the guide to cutting a guest list has a fair method.

RSVPify's 2019 figures found 83 percent of invited guests said yes. To seat about 185, invite around 223. Our guide to how many people to invite works through that rate.

Other guest counts. 175 guests, 180 guests, 190 guests, 195 guests.
