Kids-welcome wedding RSVP wording you can copy

If children are invited, ask how many will come, and whether they need a meal. A high chair is a seat in the headcount.

The short answer

Name the children, or ask Children attending ________. Add high chair / child's meal / adult meal if the kitchen needs it. Count every child who needs a chair in the table plan, including toddlers.

A kids-welcome wedding is the opposite of an adults-only one, and it still needs a firm list. Children who might come are not the same as children who will. The reply is how you find out before you order high chairs. Contrast with adults-only wording.

The invitation line

Print this on the invitation itself, or on a small enclosure if the main card is already full.

We would love your family with us. Kindly reply by 29 May with the names of everyone who will come.

The reply card

5 lines, and nothing else that the kitchen or the seating chart will not use.

Use this when children are invited as a rule, not as a one-off exception, including family-heavy weddings and daytime celebrations.

Wait until a few days after the printed date, then send this once. Copy the replies into the same list you use for the cards, so you are not keeping two headcounts.

Hi Rosa, we are ordering high chairs on Monday. We have you as a yes and wanted to confirm whether Mateo and Luisa are coming, so we can set places for them.

When this wording fits, and when it does not

Do not write children welcome on a card whose envelope named only the parents. Do not assume every invited child will come. Do not forget that a child's meal is still a plate.

The date on the card is not a guess. Work it back from the caterer's headcount deadline with the RSVP deadline calculator. The usual window is ten days to two weeks before that date, as in when to send invitations.

Questions

How do you ask about children on an RSVP?

A line for their names, and a count of high chairs or child meals if the caterer offers them.

Do babies need a reply?

Yes, if they will be in the room. A lap is still a person the fire code and the caterer may need to know about.

Should kids have a meal choice?

If you are offering a child's plate, yes. Otherwise they share the adult choice, or you note a high chair only.

What if parents ask to bring a child who was not named?

That is a plus-one by another name. Answer with the same rule you used on the envelopes.
